Unreal Tournament

Unreal Tournament is currently the single-best test for S3TC yet. Seeing as S3 released a MeTaL driver after overwhelming complaints that S3TC couldn't be used with the Viper II (despite the fact that S3 had Epic implement the textures specifically for the Viper II), it also gauges MeTaL performance quite well. For testing, I used the demo made by Warner Young. It uses the Barricade Demo (which is CPU intensive) along with 2 bots to gauge S3TC performance. I used the 2,0,0,3 Metal driver. A3D was turned off. I left on 22KHz Sound with 16 channels and digital music, because no one plays in silence.

  16-bit 32-bit
640x480 48.26 49.08
800x600 48.20 48.40
1024x768 46.20 45.91
1280x1024 41.41

39.52

The scores are very strong in all resolutions, especially for a CPU intensive benchmark. The high's in all resolutions were around 90fps, and the average's are shown above. 1024x768 is very playable, and 1280x1024 is still very good. Besides, it looks much better on a Viper II Z200 than any other card, thanks to the S3TC textures!

Now, let's move on to a more interesting topic: T+L performance. Yes, I tested using TreeMark and the T+L hack.
