Driver Problems, Issues and fallings

Even with all of the improvements since the days of the Savage3D and Savage4, it just can't be a S3 chipset without some driver troubles ::sigh:: The biggest improvement though is that S3 is actually working to improve the situation. Regardless, there are some serious problems with the Z-Buffering and texture corruption.

Z-Buffer Problems

The Viper2 has a serious problem regarding clipping and "sawtoothes" on the images. Take a look at TRIBES under OpenGL:

Ouch. This shot was taken with the scope (20X zoom) under the 9.10.21 ICD from Diamond. This sawtooth problem also occurs in Quake2 and Quake3 Arena. The worst I've seen is right below. Oww..

That shot has HORRENDOUS problems regarding the z-buffer. The polygons in some cases aren't even visible!! Look at the places were the structure meets the snow.

Texture Corruption

I've also seen some problems with texture corruption in Direct3D and MeTaL. Below is a shot of 3DMark99 MAX.

The textures were entirely bugged throughout the entire Game 2: First Person Shooter test. This wasn't just a freak accident as I ran the test over 20 times, at least. It occured differently each time, but it was there. Here's another shot:

I also encountered problems like this in Unreal Tournament using the 2,0,0,3 Metal Driver. Take a look at this shot:

Strangely, while in 3DMark99 MAX, the corruption was always there, it was more random in Unreal Tournament. Usually it only affected small, insignificant textures, although sometimes it glared out more, like the one above.. heh..

Well, now that we've covered the card itself, the drivers, and the driver problems, there is but one thing left to do: Benchmarks!!
